Our beliefs

Pioneering alternative materials

Nestlé Waters and its experts proactively explore opportunities for alternatives to virgin PET, notably recycled PET and bio-based PET. For example, thanks to the high recycling rate of California residents, and with help from its strategic partner CarbonLITE, our Arrowhead brand in the United States now ensures that all its bottles made in California incorporate 50% post-consumer recycled plastic content. Most recently, our Nestlé Pure Life brand introduced a 700-mL bottle made from 100% recycled plastic on retail store shelves in North America.

We also support bio-based PET, viewing it as an opportunity to move from petroleum-based PET to PET sourced from fully renewable sources. Nestlé Waters’ brands such as Levissima in Italy are already using a percentage of bio-based PET in their bottles. We continue to engage with other stakeholders to understand and optimize the supply and environmental performance of these materials.

Water Stewardship

In order to preserve the quality of Henniez mineral water, we protect nature as part of the ECO-Broye project, on 2,400 hectares around the source. Nestlé Waters works closely with farmers and other local stakeholders in order to protect natural resources and eco-systems and promote biodiversity in the Broye region.

Soon after taking over the Henniez brand in 2008, Nestlé Waters introduced an integrated water stewardship programme that strengthened earlier initiatives such as creating a protected zone of 120 hectares (The Henniez Domain) around the Henniez source. There, pesticides and phytosanitary products are banned.

Since 2009, 20 beehives have been installed and the bees can peacefully enjoy the pesticides-free domain.

Thriving and resilient communities

We are intrinsically linked to the local communities in which we live and work – and with whom we share water resources. Nestlé Waters operates around 91 factories in 30 countries, most of which are located in rural or semirural areas. These local communities may face sustainability and development challenges that impact their local livelihoods and wellbeing.

Our beliefs for thriving and resilient communities

  • When it comes to creating shared value, we believe that the communities located close to our factories come first.
  • We acknowledge our direct social and economic responsibility towards helping our local communities thrive and become resilient. This is particularly true when we operate in remote or rural areas, where Nestlé Waters can be a major contributor to local socio-economic development.
  • We fundamentally believe that access to safe drinking water is a basic human right. It is also a prerequisite for our local communities to thrive over the long term.
  • We believe open dialogue will help drive the collaboration necessary to create sustainable social and economic value in our communities.

Water: stewarding resources for future generations

Water is essential for life. It is at the very core of sustainable development, but the world today is facing a water management crisis. Global demand is exceeding the planet’s supply and water shortages are already threatening the livelihood of approximately two billion people and many ecosystems around the world.

Our beliefs on caring about water

  • Water security is a global challenge that requires local solutions.
  • Water is a shared and precious resource that must be managed sustainably, through collective actions.
  • The guiding principles of water stewardship (transparency, engagement and improvement) are critical drivers to efficiently manage water resources for future generations.
  • We have a wealth of water knowledge and expertise, giving us the impetus to act as a catalyst to promote water stewardship practices where we operate.
  • Water is essential for our business, making us, as an industry, entirely dependent upon a secure supply of water – in both quantity and quality.

Plastic: stewarding resources for future generations

Plastic material is mainly petroleum-sourced, and its production today is expected to double by 2025. Although polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is 100 per cent recyclable, today more than half of PET bottles worldwide are still not collected nor recycled.

Our beliefs for a sustainable plastic bottle model

  • PET is the preferred packaging material in the beverage industry because it combines optimal protection of product qualities with lightness, resistance and transparency.
  • As PET is a 100% recyclable material that can be widely reused in multiple applications, including bottle-to-bottle, it is a high value plastic that has the potential, if properly managed, to achieve a circular economy model.
  • Only solutions that are embraced by the whole plastic value chain can make a real difference in boosting PET recycling rates and the availability of high quality r-PET.
  • Consumers also have an important role to play in helping recycling efforts through disposing of waste plastic properly.

Water Stewardship

For over 25 years, we have been committed to preserving water resources by working in partnership with stakeholders towards sustainable water management and protecting the environment.

In 2018, all the local farmers in Etalle (where the Valvert bottling plant and source are located), Nestlé Waters, and the Etalle local administration, signed an agreement to protect the Valvert source through sustainable farming: the farmers use zero pesticides, the Etalle administration does not use chemicals for weeding, and Nestlé Waters supports the farmers by providing training and advice from experienced agronomists and bio-engineers. We are also working on getting certified against the AWS standard in the coming years.

Environmental sustainability

A core piece of the ECO-Broye project is the biggest agricultural biogas plant in Switzerland. The manure from around 25 farms is brought to the biogas plant at any time of the year. Coffee waste from the nearby Nespresso and Nescafé production and recycling is added. The biogas generated from the waste is transformed into heat and electricity for nearly 1,500 households. After the recycling process the farmers receive a high-quality organic fertilizer in exchange.

About Henniez

With more than 100 years of existence, Henniez has become one of the favorite mineral waters of the Swiss. In 1928 the brand became the first mineral water available all over Switzerland.

Henniez is available via many bottles sizes to be consumed in restaurants, on the move or at home. Since 1974, its three gas levels, recognizable by the famous color codes — red, green and blue — have contributed to the success of the Henniez brand.

Preserving nature and Henniez Domain are our main focus. Thanks to the forest, which protects groundwater, Henniez mineral water remains pure and balanced.

Henniez is proud to sponsor the Montreux Jazz Festival, refreshing music lovers from all over the world. Thanks to the brand’s partnership with the Athletissima Lausanne athletics meeting and the 20KM of Lausanne running race, athletes in action can also count on Henniez to be reinvigorated.

Focusing on the end-of-life of PET bottles

We take an active role in the development of well-functioning collection, sorting and recycling schemes in the countries where we operate. To tackle the global issues of plastic packaging waste, industry players, local and national governments, civil society and consumers all have a vital role to play.

The work we do depends upon how waste is managed in a particular location, but could include the development of deposit return schemes (DRS) or extended producer responsibility (EPR) approaches. We will use our experience and technical expertise to add value and take a leadership role to drive industry change where we can.

Beyond delivering on Nestlé’s 2025 commitment, our longer-term ambition is to stop plastic leakage into the environment across our operations. Here the main challenge lies in collecting and sorting waste, particularly in countries without formal waste management systems.

Environmental sustainability

Our factory has received a 5 star ‘Excellent’ Certification from BREEAM, the leading UK independent design assessment method for sustainable building. Our bottling plant is now 100% powered by electricity from renewable sources: solar, wind or hydroelectric power.

All our bottles are 100% recyclable because they are made from PET plastic. That’s why we partnered with Virgin Money London Marathon to organize the collection of the bottles we distributed along the route, for them to be recycled later into new bottles.

Since 2012, thanks to our modernized production facilities, our new bottle shape designs across the range use on average 25% less plastic.

Discover Buxton water’s sustainability initiatives

About Buxton

In 1992, Buxton became part of the Nestlé group.

The latest marketing campaign called ‘Here’s to the Up and Coming’ follows stories of resilience and determination from three up and comers from the worlds of music, sport, and dance. It explore how these individuals overcome their struggles and obstacles, building their resilience to achieve their ambitions. The campaign draws a parallel between the British talents’ own challenges and the journey that Buxton water travels, pushing up through layers of rock until finally breaking back through the earth’s surface in the heart of the Peak District.

Buxton water is available in UK supermarkets, high street stores and retailers.

Environmental sustainability

At Valvert, we go further, taking a major leap forward in sustainability by being the first Belgian natural mineral water brand to launch a new bottle made entirely from recycled PET or rPET to encourage the circular economy.

According to Fost Plus, 87,7 % of PET bottles were recycled in Belgium in 2017. We want to go further, for more than just PET bottles, and transform our recycling system.

That is why, in 2018, Nestlé pledged in Belgium to:

  • Collect and recycle 90% of all drink packaging by 2022
  • Reduce litter by 20% by 2022
  • Double the collection rate of sorted packaging out of home by 2025.

We aim to have not only our 150cl bottle be 100% rPET but to also have our currently 50% rPET 50cl bottle be 100% rPET by the end of first semester of 2020.

About Valvert

It is in the Vallée Verte, heart of the Etalle forest in the Gaume, south of Belgium, that Valvert takes its source.

The protected environment of 3500 ha around the Valvert source allows for a qualitative natural filtering. The forest serves as a natural antipollution shield and is the best protection to guarantee the quality of the water.

Valvert is a local pioneer in sustainability. Both in terms of water stewardship, packaging and transport Valvert’s aim is to work towards a neutral impact on nature.

Plastics collection, sorting and recycling schemes

PET is 100% recyclable and is the most recycled plastic material. PET bottles are a resource, not waste. However, to extract the value of each bottle they must be collected, recycled, and reused in secondary applications, such as manufacturing new bottles, or for textile.

In France, reverse vending machines are currently being tested as a means to complement existing waste management systems. And RECO, an innovative plastic bottle recycling program, uses special bottle bins positioned on retailer parking lots. Each time a customer inserts a bottle in the bin, they receive a 2-centime discount coupon!

We are developing collaborative projects that could improve plastics collection, and will share our findings to assess whether they can be scaled-up or replicated. For example, in the USA we have invested USD $6 million in the Closed Loop Fund (which pools money from business, government and community partners), to develop recycling infrastructure programs in US cities.

Consumers also have vital role to play. We’ve helped raise awareness through brand platforms and corporate education programs, such as R-Generation in Italy, Argentina, United Kingdom and Thailand. In North America, we’ve introduced clear and consistent How2Recycle instructions to the labels of half-liter bottles for all our major US brands. We will continue to use the strength of our brands to encourage consumers to recycle.

Water Stewardship

Our Buxton factory is independently certified as ‘Zero Waste’ to landfill. It features traditional Derbyshire dry stone walls and was built mainly by local craftsmen using materials mainly sourced within 50 miles.

We support our community through our local partnerships with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts: we’ve launched the ‘Get Better with Nature’ campaign to help our community reconnect with the natural world.

In order to support Buxton’s ecosystem, we’ve planted a butterfly meadow in our factory grounds.

To encourage people to recycle their bottles, we’re supporting Hubbub‏’s anti-littering campaign “For Fish’s Sake London, don’t drop litter!”

Drinking better to lead healthier lives

Food and beverages play a fundamental role in our lives, but they also present society with some of its biggest challenges. Over the past 10 years, converging scientific evidence has highlighted that overconsumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is a factor in the prevalence of obesity and its related diseases.

Our beliefs for healthy hydration

  • Water is essential for life. We believe that what you drink is as important to your health as what you eat and how often you exercise.
  • Water, which contains zero calories and zero sugar, is a healthy replacement for sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • Water — whether bottled or from the tap — should be the first choice when it comes to daily hydration.
  • We need to do more to persuade people to choose water for daily hydration.
  • Our role is to inform consumers and help them adopt healthy drinking habits.
  • Adopting good hydration habits starts early: that is why educating children to drink water on a daily basis is one of our key priorities.
