Story
Hibiki is the daughter of Genzō Takane (高嶺 源蔵, Takane Genzō), a renowned swordsmith known throughout Japan during the Bakumatsu era. He had retired to an isolated area in the countryside with his daughter but continued his work with various swordsmen around the country. One fateful day, a silver-haired man approaches Genzō and requests that he forge a new sword. Though the man radiated an aura of pure, unfathomable evil, the master swordsmith finds himself unable to refuse the request. He spends a time of almost 3 months forging this sword, which he dubs the “Yaso Magatsu Hi no Tachi” (八十枉津日太刀, “Blade of Eighty Days Harbored Unwillingly”), detailing the amount of time he invested in the weapon. The labor renders him ill, however, and he is soon permanently bedridden.
He tells his daughter that the silver-haired man was the reason for his condition, and that she should pursue him and the sword that he had forged. With a concerned Hibiki by his side, he utters his last words: “The thing that I saw… that I felt, even you must understand.” Though she was confused by her father’s cryptic request, Hibiki gathers her belongings and leaves in search of the silver-haired man.
Several days later, a man named Hyo Amano stops by, hoping that Genzō would repair his weapon, the “Otokomae”, when he learns of the swordsmith’s death, he sets out to find his daughter.
Hibiki has two endings in the game; in one of them she visits her father’s grave and decides to improve her swordsmanship which can be gained if the player defeats every opponent they face in Arcade mode with her super moves. In the other ending should the player not use her super moves to finish all opponents, she tells her father that now she has a «companion».

HistoryEdit
100 years ago, Hibiki Tokai, the son of Lord Gran-Pa and Lady Gran-Ma (leaders of Planet Taraak and Planet Mejeer) was put into a cold sleep. Due to unknown reasons, he woke up 14 years ago and was put into the care of his father’s younger brother, whom he refers to as «Jii-chan» (Grandfather). Years later, he moves out of his Grandfather’s house and worked in a Vanguard factory as the mechanic, the job which was determined by his social class. He came to hate the environment where he worked at and dreams of a better life.
His life changes when the Mejeer picked him and two other males up aboard the Pirate Ship. Here, he found the proof of his existence.
Hibiki Tokai is the male protagonist, as well as a stubborn and hot head third-class citizen of Taraak that gets thrown into the mess with Duelo and Bart. He was unwilling to do anything but hide when the Nirvana was attacked by Harvesters when they appeared halfway across the galaxy. However, after a talk from the sub-commander, BC, Hibiki gets into a Vanguard (Bangaata), in an attempt to help the female pilots fight the enemy. He is very rash but gets the job done, as well as often ends any enemy threat quickly. By the end of the series, it is revealed he is the son of the empress of Mejere and emperor of Taraak, Lady Grand-ma and Lord Grand-pa respectively, who was frozen in hibernation, but awakened mysteriously around 14 years before the series began. His uncle, Grand-pa’s younger brother, whom he refers to as “grandfather,” took care of him when he emerged from cryostasis. It is also his rally to the two planets that convinces all of them that they should fight for their right to live when the Harvester fleet from Earth arrives. During the course of the series, Hibiki and Dita have an odd-couple relationship. In the initial episodes, Hibiki would run away from Dita every time she came after him, finding her very annoying. He even screamed at her, getting her to leave him alone, for which he indirectly apologizes to her later. Eventually, Hibiki gets used to being around Dita, often helping her out on board the Nirvana. He also falls in love with Dita’s cooking and eventually with Dita herself. As the series progresses he grows more mature, having his own existence recognized by the other members of Nirvana, becoming a more strong pilot and person.
The crew on board the Nirvana sees the romantic feelings developing between Hibiki and Dita, often wondering when the two will admit their feelings for each other. The crew wants to see a romance story unfold, as well as to know if it’s at all possible for a man and woman to be that close.
The series also features Hibiki’s relationships with the other girls which range all the way from sisterly to obsessive.
In the manga, his relationship with Dita is much more romantic and he reciprocates Dita’s feelings faster and even kisses her (which is something that never happens in the anime). Since Dita doesn’t refer him as “Mr. Alien” but his name, he also call her by her name frequently (where in the anime he very rarely called out her name). The budding romance between Hibiki and Dita form the main plot of the manga. In the Vandread Extra Stage Novel, it is revealed that after the end of the series, Hibiki and Dita get married and have a baby.

- By combining their own birthday digits (Hibiki’s 5+25 = 30 & Alicia’s 2+23 = 25), then deducting Alicia’s sum from Hibiki’s sum (30-25 = 5), the final number is five, alluding to the five year gap between I Believe’s revival and their hiatus.
- Her favorite drink is cola.
- Her specialties are playing instruments and singing.
- Hibiki shares resemblance with Aine Yūki in respects of their hair, both starting with a shade of pink, then fading to a shade of peach.

Fighting Style
Musō Shinden-ryū is a real style and an anachronism for the game; the style was not founded until 1932. It is a branch of Iaido. Some of her basic attacks bear some resemblance to Ukyo Tachibana’s, where it involves frequent quick-draws, dashing-based slashes, as well as some solid counterattacks that require some precision but can prove to be fatal if landed correctly.
In Capcom vs. SNK 2, her Speed Mode ‘Custom Combos’ AKA the Ranbu Ōgi from Last Blade 2 is given to her as a normal super move. In addition she has slightly different animations for her supers in Capcom vs. SNK 2, with the blood being replaced by sparks.
Hibiki is among the few characters in CvS2 who has a unique winpose, if she defeats someone with her original SDM/Senzai Ōgi, with her hair untied as a result of her attack connecting. It’s a visual cue that the landed attack will be fatal for the enemy.

Personality
Hibiki poses
Like the rest of the Trimens, Hibiki behaves like a typical womanizer in that he usually charms up to any female (regardless of the age) he meets for the first time ever; often with little to no shame, even if accomplices of that woman are there to watch.
Nevertheless, he is capable of becoming serious when he wants to be; he also possesses some level of will power, having resisted Nirvana’s effect for a time before passing out, though he notes to himself that Lucy’s bond with Celestial Spirits is what truly saved him, afterwards. He is also quite a gentlemen towards others, as he is very polite and typically addresses others with honorifics. He is apparently more perceptive and knowledgeable than he lets on, and because of this, he was the only member of his team whom Bob entrusted with the information regarding Nirvana’s true capabilities.
TriviaEdit
- Hibiki means «echo», Верный (Verniy) means «loyal» and her final name, Декабрист (Dekabrist) is a tribute to the Decembrist revolt.

- Верный was first carried by a submarine class in the old USSR.
- Hibiki’s present incarnation exists as the lead ship of Hibiki-class Ocean Surveillance Ship, AOS-5201 JDS Hibiki of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
- Received her Kai Ni (Верный) on 11/09/2013.
- Shunsaku Kudō was transferred to Hibiki after his humanitarian rescue of enemy personnel while captain of Ikazuchi.
- She was retired from service on February 20 1953 and sunk as a target by the Soviet Naval Aviation team sometime in the 1970’s at Karamzina Island near Vladivostok.

Japanese Whisky
Less than a century old and with only a handful of distilleries, Japanese whisky has moved fast to develop its own unique style – or rather styles – and has met with growing acclaim in the West in recent years. From light and precise to smoky and fat, its malts and blends offer a world of whisky in miniature.
Nikka’s Yoichi distillery is known for its rich, peaty whiskies
It takes two
The early years of Japanese whisky are dominated by two men: Masataka Taketsuru and Shinjiro Torii. Taketsuru was famously sent to Scotland in 1918 to learn about whisky-making, studying in Glasgow and getting hands-on experience in Speyside and Campbeltown before returning to Japan with a head full of facts and a Scottish wife.
When he joined forces with Torii in about 1921, Taketsuru’s vision was to build a distillery on the remote northern island of Hokkaido – the part of the country he thought most mirrored Scotland. However, Torii feared this was too far from the main markets of central Honshu, vetoed the idea and instead built Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto in 1923.
Taketsuru swallowed his reservations and worked as Yamazaki’s first distillery manager before leaving in 1934 to strike out on his own and finally realise his dream: the building of the Yoichi distillery on Hokkaido.
Eighty years later, the companies founded by Torii and Taketsuru – Suntory and Nikka respectively – still dominate the Japanese whisky industry. But, unlike the twin monoliths of Scotch whisky, Diageo and Pernod Ricard, they don’t have dozens of distilleries, but only four between them.
Chameleons of distillation
While Scotland took centuries to build up a critical mass of about 100 malt distilleries, all with subtly different styles, Japan wanted to move faster, and with just a small number of sites. What’s more, Suntory and Nikka don’t trade whisky with each other – which, as in Scotland, would increase their blending options.
What developed was a very different model of distillation: plants like Yamazaki which produce a multiplicity of styles thanks to an eclectic collection of still shapes and sizes, plus a range of peated/unpeated barley, different yeast strains, fermentations, cut points – not to mention a number of cask options including the distinctive mizunara or Japanese oak.
These chameleons of distillation – Suntory stablemate Hakushu and Nikka’s two plants, Yoichi and Miyagikyou, follow a broadly similar philosophy – play havoc with the notion of ‘single’ malt, and yet there is a common thread that unites their bottlings, from Yamazaki’s floral roundness to Hakushu’s precision; and from Miyagikyou’s spiced fruit to Yoichi’s heavy smoke.
Old and new
As in Scotland, shuttered distilleries in Japan have a cachet all their own. In particular, the unique style of Karuizawa – rich, resinous, matured in small ex-sherry casks – has gathered a cult following. Meanwhile, newer distilleries such as Ichiro Akuto’s Chichibu are now attracting more and more attention.
Pioneering spirit
Japan’s early debt to Scottish techniques can mask the innovative streak that runs through the country’s whisky industry – a characteristic perhaps most readily appreciated in its blends.
As in Scotland, these are the drivers of the industry, comfortably outselling their single malt counterparts and, in Japan, driven by the mizuwari highball serve of whisky combined with lots of ice and water.
Blends such as Hibiki and Nikka From the Barrel are rightly lauded for their quality – but Japanese blends are equally remarkable for their experimental side, from different peating levels to the use of Japanese mizunara oak and plum wine cask finishes.
